Too Big to Be True

Is it really true, or too big to be true? Spot hyperbole, figure out what the exaggeration really means, and explain why the author used it. Play on your own or teach the whole class.
Purpose

Students practice telling hyperbole from literal statements, explaining what an exaggeration really means, and explaining why the author used it. Every wrong answer is built from a real reading trap.

How it works

Pick a grade and a way to play. Every item has two parts: Part A asks Hyperbole or Literal, and Part B asks what it means or why the author used it. Work through three levels of harder text.

Three questions

Before every answer, ask: Could this really happen? What does it really mean? Why did the author say it this way?
