Why identifiers
Students join TBASE with your last name, the class code, and a student identifier you give them, such as Student 4 or Dolphin. They never type their real names.
Only you know who is who. Real student names never go into TBASE. Keep your own paper roster that matches each identifier to a student. Results, reports, and class reports in TBASE show only the identifier.
How to set it up
- Pick a theme below. Your class can vote on the theme. It makes joining fun.
- Give each student one identifier from the list. Every identifier must be different within a class.
- Print the roster below and write each student name by hand next to the identifier. Keep it in a safe place. Do not type names into TBASE.
- Students join with your last name, the class code, and their identifier. They use the same identifier every time.
Avoid identifiers that look like people names (for example, author or celebrity last names). Animals, colors, places, and numbers work best.
Fun ways to hand out identifiers
- Draw from a hat. Cut the list into slips and let each student draw one.
- Pick your own. Students choose from the class theme list, first come, first served.
- Class vote. The class votes on the theme, then you hand out identifiers in roster order.
- Mystery envelope. Seal each identifier in an envelope and reveal them together.
- Match a job. Tie identifiers to classroom jobs or table groups (for example, all Ocean animals at one table set).
- Reveal day. Make it a celebration: students design a name card or drawing for their identifier.
Tip: keep the same identifier all year so each student's progress stays in one place.
If you teach more than one class
Each class you create in TBASE gets its own class code. Give every class or period a different theme so you can tell them apart at a glance. For example: first period Ocean animals, second period Space, third period Foods.
Will another teacher with the same last name and theme mix things up? No. Students are matched by the class code, which is unique to your class. Your last name is only a double check. Even if another Smith in Texas uses Zoo animals, her students and yours stay completely separate, and you each see only your own classes through your own login.
