Good readers use a dictionary to find a word's meaning, its syllables, and how to say it. In Grade 5 they also learn where a word came from.
Choose a grade and a level. Each question shows a dictionary entry. Answer with one choice, with two choices, or by selecting a part of the entry itself, just like the STAAR/SST. You get a second try with a hint. Stuck? The help button (or the H key) gives three small steps, one tap each, and never shows the answer: Remind me keeps full credit, Narrow it can earn up to 75 percent, and Show me where up to 50 percent. Narrow it and Show me where open after your first try. Three stars need no help beyond Remind me.
Level 1: parts of an entry, syllables, pronunciation, and guide words. Level 2: choose the definition used in a sentence. Level 3: a short passage with a highlighted word, then a second question about guide words or word origin.
