Device Detective

Read a line, spot the clue words, and name the literary device: simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, onomatopoeia, alliteration, or idiom. Play on your own or teach the whole class.
Purpose

Students practice naming the device an author uses and explaining what it shows. Every wrong answer is built from a real reading trap.

How it works

Pick a grade and a way to play. Work through three levels: single sentences, passages, then tricky cases. After every answer you learn why the right answer works and which trap each wrong answer set.

Three questions

Before every answer, ask: What are the clue words? What does it show? Which device fits?
